Potential Damage?

Haven't been around much lately, but am happy to report my 'new to me' boat is great!!

A glitch over the last week and I'm wondering if or what I should be checking for potential damage.

1994 Mercruiser 5.0, Alpha I, GenII

I let a friend drive it for a few days while he was at our cabin. (ya I know) He reported that one day the belts were squealing and when he checked the engine compartment there was enough water in the bilge that the drive out of the motor was submerged and lower pulley. He turned off the motor and emptied the bilge. (yes, I just bought a automatic bilge)

I went up the cabin last week and sure enough the boat is taking on water. I take it out and tighten all the bellows clamps. (they were replaced by mechanic end of last season) Sure enough...no more leak.

I'm relieved!

BUT - The outdrive doesn't quite sound the same. It sounded flawless before, just that sweet 'rrrrrrr'. Now there is a rhythmic sound to it.

I pulled the boat, checked the gear oil. Seemed 'ok'. If it was milky it was just slightly milky...as in it was really close...hard to tell. So I changed the oil anyway just in case. Drove it for about 2 hours after that, but it was raining when I pulled it and forgot to check it again. A hint of shavings. ("shavings" seems to drastic....more like just a bit of metal dirt on the magnet)

Still sounded the same, nothing horrible or anything that drastic, just not a perfect as before.

I greased all the outdrive nipples I could find and I checked the engine oil and it too seemed fine.

Is there potential damage to the drive if its submerged? Possible explanation to the new 'noise'?

Re: Potential Damage?

have ya pulled the drive off yet?

imho. if the bellows what was leaking, enough so that water entered the boat, that area inside the bellows must have had water in it too.
water and ujoints and gimble brgs and ft. seal of the drive don't mix well with water. the ujoints will rust, the gimble brg. will rust. the ft. seal of the drive is designed to keep gear lub inside the drive, not water out of the drive, since water shouldn't be in that area. water will rust the drive gear ujoint yoke, the rust will shred the ft. seal since it will no longer have a smooth surface to run on, then it'll leak gear lub into the bellows area.

i'd pull the drive and have a look... any of them things could be taking place + need attention.

Thanks for the response. That's exactly what I was wondering about.

No, I haven't pulled the outdrive. Nor have I ever pulled an outdrive. Time to look into how to do that and what seals I should have along.

And be prepared to put a starter in soon. Starters and water are never a good thing.

I'll pull the outdrive the next time we're up to take a look and empty any water in there.

If the starter goes hopefully that will be the last thing I have to repair on the boat.
(snicker....that's a little boat humour)

Paul, make sure you put the throttle in full foward position! The first time I ever took an outdrive off, I didn't know that. And needless to say i couldn't get it off.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and while you got the drive unit off you can check you engine alingment . In order to find out if water got in the upper drive housing you can take off the four twelve pointed bolt on thop of the upper housing and take a peak in the to see if the gear oil turned white ( water got in it ) or if the oil is the normal color . You will have to monitor that area even if you do not tear into because drive yoke could have started to rust and will comprimise the yoke seal area
