Hi

I’m having serious problems with the power steering of my 5.7l engine with alpha one stern drive.
I totally lost power steering and I had the steering unit replaced by a new one. Problem was not solved. Then the power steering pump was replaced by a new one, but with no result at all. Also the steering pin (??) was disconnected from the stern drive but still without any positive result. The belt looks okay, the power steering system was flushed, original quicksilver fluid has been used… but no power steering at all. The wheelhouse is also checked as well as the cables –but everything works at just fine (when not connected to the transom assembly)

Does anyone have a clue what we might overlook??

Thank you!

Would this be a 1970 or a 2006 model? Alpha? Bravo?

Can you move the drive back and forth by hand when the cable is disconneted?

You checked the helm cables? you replaced the slave cylinder and the pump? Did you bleed the lines after refilling the pump ? Just a thought!:/

Danny, I had a similar incident with the steering and had to replace the slave cylinder. Having lost all the fluid in the system,
Once I refilled the pump and with the motor ideling I cracked open the hydraulic lines one at a time at the slave cylinder until fluid appeared and then re-tightened this induced fluid flow to the slave and back to the pump.
I had easy access to the slave where no moving motor parts hindered my doing this. Re check fluid level while working the helm. good luck.

There is a very simple system for bleeding the lines on a powersteering system.
With the engine NOT running, turn the wheel lock to lock about 6 times, the system will bleed most of the air out. Then start the engine and turn it again.
Always make sure the pump is full, or you are adding air to the system.
