powe trim and tilt

I have a j90tslec SPL with trim and tilt. While the motor will tilt and trim, both at the helm and stern, the guage will not move from the down position. Is there any way of testing the sending switch which is located port side on the transom bracket. The ability to check the dash gauge is restricted by a large round body and a small square hole.

Raise the engine. Turn the key to ON (not START). Manually move the lever on the trim sender. If there is no response on the gauge, an ohm meter test at the nearest connector will confirm if the sender is working. If it tests ok, the wiring or the gauge is bad.

Thanks for the advice. This has happend befor and it was the sender that was hung up. However this time it is not hung up. I will test it this afternoon.
