I have a 20 ft. Aluminum cuddy cabin with a 4 cylinder mercrusier I/O. Dont know the weight, but it is very light compared to a 20 ft. glass boat. Will a 3.3 hp. Johnson provide enough power to return to dockside in case of big motor failure? Say a 10 to 20 mile run.
Thanks,
Fitz.

Re: Power Boat?

I doubt it.
I have a new 4hp on a 16'open alum fishing boat.
It struggles, also hard to steer with ANY cross breeze. It does ok at 2-4mph trolling speed.
Let's see, 20 miles at 2mph equals a 10 hour ride home.

I would look for a larger motor. (9.9-15hp)
Also a long shaft and a motor with forward/neu/reverse.

Re: Power Boat?

Fitz,

These guys are right. Forget about the 3.3hp. Get a used 9.9 or 15hp. I have a 1985 9.9 Evinrude that just wont stop running. I run it at 2 speeds, idle and full throttle. It's like that old lawn mower that just wont die!

A 15hp would probably weigh the same as a 9.9. The 1985 9.9 weighs the same as the 1985 15hp, just tuned differently.

Thanks all
I liked the very light weight of the 3.3 but if it wont push hard enough then i will be looking for a 7.5 to 10.
Thanks again, Fitz.

Re: Power Boat?

i have a 15 pushing an 18 1/2' Baron (fiberglass cuddy cab) which is just enough to get it going. I would be looking at either a 8 or 15 (or anything inbetween), but particularly at the upper end of that range. Andrew
