if you are sure all the nuts and bolts are out, it could be that the gasket is holding. Put a nut back on one of the studs on the port or starboard side. Install the nut so its just flush with the end of the stud. Pry in an upward motion with a large screw driver or pinch bar between the end of the nut and the center housing. This should brake the gasket loose. Be SURE all the nuts and bolts are out first!!!!!

Hi Volero,
I have just gone throught this exercise with a 40HP Mercury (early 70's) - and thought the same as you - as long as you are sure all the bolts are all out - they can be really stubborn. It took about 2 and a half hours to get mine off. We had a puller (hoist) attached to the flywheel with some tension on it - didn't budge!Eventually we put some nuts back on and found a part on the body of the outboard to put some leverage on the bolts to part it from the gasket. You do have to be very careful though - aluminium cracks very easily - choose a strong part of the housing. Also alot of rocking back to front and side to side helps - if you don't want to try the leverage trick.

good luck

disconnected the shift rod? not sure what the configuration is on that model. If it's the shift rod, you would be able to crack the housing pieces apart slightly -- should be obvious it's not stuck at the gasket (if there is one).
