Power Head Removal

I'm having trouble removing the power head from the lower unit on my 1994 X-flow 115. I removed the bolts listed in the manual and disconnected the shift link. Applied pressure with pry bar rear corners near exhaust manifold and most of the motor weight is suspended from hoist. Any suggestions? I did have a lot of trouble with the flywheel as well, took over a week with puller and PBlaster. I did have the lower unit off in the summer to replace water pump so I don't think the output shaft is frozen to crank. My goal is to replace the pistons and rings. Blew out ring in cylinder #1. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Power Head Removal

If you got all the bolts out, there shouldn't be anything more holding it in there.

Did you remove the four nuts on the lower four corners, they are connected to screw studs that are attached to the power head.

Re: Power Head Removal

I removed 6- long and 2 short from each side up from lower unit and 4 above to lower case. I've read that you can use oak wedges to help with the separation. Tough to get to the area, the lower engine cover is blocking access. This cover can't be removed with the powerhead in place #$%&.

Re: Power Head Removal

Sometimes if you have ALL the bolts and stud nuts removed, you can put pressure on it with a hoist attached to the center of the flywheel with the correct lift ring and rock the hell out of it side ways and this will break the gasket loose.

First remove the lower unit so you don't break the seal area on the bottom of the crank. Now, there are 2 studs in the back under the exhaust manifold area. Then the stud and bolt on each side near the front. Then the front pan mount bolts on each side, the rear pan mount bolts don't have to come out. Along with the 6 long bolts you mentioned should be all the powerhead nuts and bolts.

Still won't budge, all bolts removed 4 on each side up into block, 4 above to lower engine cover, and nuts from 4 studs removed. Soaked with PBlaster I think corrosion is holding up release in the four studs arrrrrrrr. Power head attached to hoist with pressure hoping something will give.
