Howdy! Just picked up my “new” 1983 E90TLCTE. The first boat I ever bought had a 1972 evinrude 115 hp motor. I got to the lake one time with the 115 and crank, crank, etc. took it to a mechanic and he said power pack was bad. He said that hooking up the charger to the battery probably blew it out and I should disconnect the battery cables every time I want to charge it. Do I need to be that careful with this “new” motor or was that problem been fixed by 1983?

No need to disconnect the battery on that 1983 engine if that's your question. Just do not ever hook the battery or the battery charger up backwards as that will damage the alternator rectifier. The ignition on that 1983 model is self contained, having its power supplied by one portion of the stator which is located under the flywheel.

You old 1972 engine? That unit depends on having voltage supplied by the battery. That would have an entirely different type ignition system BUT charging the battery with it still connected would not damage the pulsepack (powerpack). However, using anything less than a top notch fully charged battery of less than a 70 amp hour rating would cause the pack to fail in time.
