I have a 77 merc 150 and have a problem with it dying after it has been running for 15 minutes, on the water, and it will not dye if it out of water in gear at 0r about 3 to 4 grand on tach. It will only do it when it has a load on it in the water. Can some one help me narrow this down to one thing.I know alittle about boat motors but not enough. What is the process to test the two. And what is the little box that the stator runs through. I know it has power to it when the key is on.
Can i use a multi tester for this?

Re: power pack or stator

You need a manual. I think you may be referring to the rectifier,(Little box) which converts AC to DC and keeps battery charged. Most components can be tested through a basic multitester, but you need to refer to the manual for appropriate specs.

BTW Running the motor at high RPM on muffs or tank is not recommended (Max 1200 RPM)..

db1971 I really don't know the 1977 set up but what you can try to check the stator is onces she dies and you have a multimeter set to ohms x1000 see what the resistance is on the stator wires that go to the switch box I dont know if that year has a high @ low side that the stator puts out voltage or take a reading on the stator wire when cold and seeif it is the same reading when the engine dies.

Re: power pack or stator

this tach must be wrong because it kick in gear easy and i didnt idle it up any. What i have been looking at is the box with wires coming off of it going to the distributor and the other side has a red /white / green/ tan blocks that is mounted in front off the carbs and below is another box with 3 wires going to stator. Maybe your right need a manual just bid on one or is there a different manual that gets in detail on my problem.
Thanks
