Power pack output test (please help)

I want to check the output of the power packs in my 1985 90hp vro. The clymer manual says I need a load adapter in combination with a voltmeter. Is this load adapter something that I can make? Is there any other method of checking out power packs? Any help or suggestions appreciated.

I posted a similar question earlier regarding powerpack testing. I made a homemade load adapter per my manuel, but it didnt work. My voltmeter never received a reading from the power pack. My repair manuel instructed me to solder a 10ohm/10 watt resistor to 12 gauge wire on each side with alligator clips... All can be bought at Radio Shack..
