I have gotten hold of a 1973 Mercury 40hp and it needs a new power pack. Is this an easy replacement? Also it needs a ingtion switch is this also something else that I can do myself? Thanks in advanced.

Re: Power Pack replacement

Neither job is difficult, get the proper replacement parts, the switchbox is all screws and nuts but the switch will require soldering

Re: Power Pack replacement

Thanks for the info can you tell me what color wires go where on the starter switch. I have a switch with a bunch of letters on the back. The motor did not have a switch to work with and I don't want to screw things up.

Re: Power Pack replacement

On the back of my stater switch it has the following letters.

B
S
I
M
M

Can anyone tell what color wire goes to each letter. This is a project that is going on as I type.
Thanks

B = Red; S = Yellow; I = White ( purple ); M = Orange (Salmon); M = Black. Run a jumper from I to one side of the choke button.

Re: Power Pack replacement

Thanks for all your help with the starter.

Is there any way to bypass the switch box? Was told the box was out and so far I have been getting quotes from $236 - $300. Please anyone help.
Thanks
