Power Pack??

Hello to all,
I was out last sunday on my 18' aluminum boat, powered by a 1989 Evinrude vro 50 hp, vro disconnected.
Tooling around at 3/4 throttle for a good 20 minutes when all of a sudden started losing power, so I backed off throttle to neutral. Motor ran normally so I was confused, until I powered back up, I took video of it but you really can't hear the sound it was making. I'll try to re-create with words....haah-uuummm,haah-uuummm,haah-uuummm and so on. Back to neutral idled for 15 minutes so back to power then the same haah-uuummm. A friend told me power pack has gone bad. What do you guys think? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Motor is strong running and well taken care off.

Do you know what a powerpack does ?----Surging like you describe is usually a fuel issue.----Checked for water in the fuel ?----Checked for leaks in your hose and INSIDE your tank on the pickup tube ?

racerone, thanks for the reply and no i do not know what the power pack does. Please enlighten me, for I have practically learned everything about my motor from you guys and you guys have never failed! I will drain tank and inspect the hose and let you know what I find.

Don't fall for that "it's always the black box (power pack)" mentality. A power pack is the electronic ignition "brain". Actually it isn't a brain or computer either. Just a few simple components sealed up to keep water and people out of it.

F_R thanks for the info, after a google search, I was able to learn what it was. After racerone's recommendation I found a crack in the top of my 12 gallon tank at the pick up tube so I will put fresh gas in my 6 gallon and take her for a spin.
I'll check in and let you both know, Thanks again for the help
