Power Pack

I just put my boat in the water and it appears that I may have lost a power pack on a '83 Johnson 175hp. One side of the engine had no spark. I switched out the two power packs and the problem followed to the other side leading me to believe that the power pack is bad. I performed a resistance check as per the manual and it seems that the diodes are ok. Can there be other problems with the power pack that will not show with a multimeter? thanks

Yes, there can be other problems with the powerpack besides diodes. One of our techs said once that most problems with them was faulty soldering.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Thanks Hooty - do you know if a higher than normal voltage can cause damage to a power pack. A local mechanic suggested that I remove the voltage regulator when it failed a few years ago and I have had no problems without it. Now, after a rebuild, the voltage gauge appears to be going higher than ever(no true voltage readout-just red and green). Do you think that this can contribute to a power pack failure. I might install the regulator along with the power pack. Thanks again
