Why don't you tell us what your problem is, and if it's not the oil cooler, we may be able to suggest what the problem may be.<br />But guessing all the possibilities of what an oil cooler could do is a waste of time.

Re: Power Steering cooling

I am loosing oil out of the steering system and it is not in the bilge. none of the connections indicate and oil leak. there is no water in the steering pump, but there is a lot in the water, almost from the instant I start the engine. At first I thought I had a valve guide seal problem, then while checking things out, it seems more unlikely. My oil lose from the crankcase is too little to justify the amount on the water. Then when I check the only other source of oil that I know of, I found the steering pump almost dry. That much oil missing would be constant with the amount on the water. I think, and I could be wrong, but the pump side has a higher pressure than the water side, so I should not see oil in the pump. Is there a poor mans way of testing the heat exchanger.

Yep, sounds like a bad power steering cooler. Some engines (You don't mention what you have) have coolers low in the system, therefor no water getting back into the system because the oil pressure is higher than the raw water, and on some systems the cooler is on the suction side of the raw water pump.

Re: Power Steering cooling

it is a MC 250 (5.7) the cooler is located below the level of the pump.

Re: Power Steering cooling

Remove it, pressure check it and see if it leaks.
