So I bought some Dexron 2 fluid for my engine cause it was almost bone dry. I fill it up and started the engine turned the steering wheel lock to lock to get the fluid in the lines. Shut the motor off and looked in the pump and filled it up again and started the motor again. Stop the motor and looked in the pump and it still was low. I looked around at all the hoses and fittings and their was no leaking. I put half a quart in already so I filled it up once again and ran the motor again. It was half full the last time I checked. I fill it up all the way to full.
I drained the block and manifolds cause it's supposed to get down into the 30's tonight. I pulled the power steering hose. I felt the water coming out and it was slimy and oily. It had a red dye to it which was the fluid. So I know theirs a leak in their.

How do I fix this leak? Do I have to buy a new power steering cooler?

The bottom of my driveway has a nice coating of hydraulic fluid on it now. Gotta drag out the pressure washer and clean it with chemicals.

That cooler is an expensive little puppy... Around $300... Take it off and take it to a radiator specialist. They can usually fix that sort of thing...

Re: Power steering leaking

I've seen some used ones on eBay around $100. if i cant fix the problem i'll either buy a used one or find someone parting out their boat and snag it off of theirs.
The cooler is in such a tight spot its going to be hard to take out. just like anything that's below the manifolds.

quick question... Why does the power steering fluid go into the block?
i understand why it goes to the cooler to be cooled off but why does it need to go into the block? the power steering cooler is the first thing that water goes into from the drive, why not have it be its own unit?

Ayuh,.... It Don't,.... It runs from the pump, to the actuator, to the cooler, 'n back to the pump,...

It's leaking PS fluid into the cooling water at the cooler...thats why yer not seeing a leak...it's going into the block...via cooling water. Thats why you had red water coming outa the drains....

Re: Power steering leaking

The cooler is under the port side motor mount and uses the bottom bolt of the mount to support the clamp for the cooler.

I think the cooler was frozen when I forgot to take the hose off. My fault on that still have to yank it off to get a better idea on what happen.
