Howdy!

I'm having some problems with steering, it's kinda hard.
It's equiped with power steering, and while turning the wheel slowly it's pretty hard, like the power steering is not working.
When giving it a good swing, it goes smoooooooth, so we checked it out, and at the back you can see the steering cable move a little bit, supposidly to move a valve in the steering housing when you give it a good swing. It's hardly moving for little steering adjustments.

It's a 94 alpha one and would like to know if there is something i can do about it.

Thanks,

Re: Power steering problem

i dont know much but i will give it a try, first make sure the power stering pump is working, disconnect the high presure line which is the larger line going to the rack at the back of the engine, put the end into a bucket, start the engine, fluid should be rushing out, if it does the power stering is working. now check the stering cable by disconnect it from that same piece in the back of engine. try turning the wheel now and see if it turn free. if it turn free your problem might be in the drive area, with the cable disconnect you should be able to swing the out drive from side to side easy. last you might have a bad stering cable , try grease up every moving part of the stering system, also try bleeding the power stering, with the engine off turn the stering all the way from one side to the other as much as you can. look at the search button above do a search ect like stiff stering or hard stering or power stering.

good luck and welcome to this great forum.

Re: Power steering problem

Thanks for the tips, I will see if i can take a look at it tomorrow if the weather is ok. I can confirm the pump is working, because sometimes it works, and sometiems it does not. I will see if i can grease it up a bit, and else will disconnect the steering cable and move on from there.

And i like the forum, really helpful and nice to help other people.

Re: Power steering problem

Iv'e got the same prob on my 94 Alpha 1 GenII 5.0 Searay the spool valve sticks abit. I remotely power my pump so I could Troubleshoot and with cable rod at steering arm disconnected I can cause the actuator to move very well. I takes a good force on the spool valve but it works as expected. The spool valve is just not getting enough force from the steering cable. i.i., sticky valve but not too sticky. I want to take it apart, clean and fix but the manual says npn-servicable. What does that mean. I know it's just on the edge of working fine, in fact it does work if you hard (quick) steer. Tried to lube, but no joy. Did you get yours fixed?

It means you don't repair it. You replace it. 'nutcase

I thought you were calling me a nutcase, ha!

Anyway, have you seen this prob and does the R&R fix it?
