Hi all,

I'm trying to find out about possibility of cross referencing this power steering pump with something ordinary and less expensive. The problem I run into when I take boat parts to the auto parts store is trying to match the 181 cid mercruiser engine to anything GM had that was actually on the road in 1986. Plus, most of the cars had some sort of fuel injection by then, but my boat has a carburetor. I've also considered a seal kit, but have never rebuilt a ps pump, so I don't know if I'll need special tools. Bottom line is if there are any suggestions as to how I can avoid a $500 replacement pump. This is in a 1986 Chris-Craft Scorpion 266AC with twin 3.0 Mercruisers with Alpha 1's.

Thank you.

And why are you considering rebuilding?
no pressure or tin leaking?

I haven't pulled the pump yet, I just know that the reservoir completely drained into the bilge without even starting the motor. By "tin", I'm assuming you mean housing. If there's a tin leak then that would involve brazing it I guess, and I don't have the equipment for that, although I could find someone who could. As far as rebuilding it, I guess I assumed that if it was some sort of seal then the seal would be in a rebuild kit. Either way, a cross referenced replacement pump from an auto parts store would solve both issues. As far as pressure, it's sort of sporadic. As you turn the wheel the power sort of kicks on and off. The mechanism that works the outdrives reminds me of the front end of a '76 Corvette, but there's no leakage there, it's all coming from the housing of the pump. The thing drained all the way out in less than 24 hours.
