Had to install a new power steering pump on my 5.0 VP as the old bearings broke down. New pump is causing seals to blow out on the steering actuator and filling up the bilge with power steering power steering fluid. Comments/suggestions on what to check so this does not happen again?

Thanks

Your return line is blocked. Either in the hose or pump itself. I guarantee it. I know it's silly but you DID remove the plastic cap off the return line nipple, right? I have seen the inside of the pump return tube blocked with a piece of paper that ironically said "Checked for quality by #56" I am not making this up.

Sounds like you have connected the hoses the wrong way round.

Where did you buy the new pump? Is it from a marine manufacture or an auto parts store? If an auto store then there are a few parts you need to swap out between the pumps so you won't have so much pressure. http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...tomotive-power-steering-pump-updated-and-done

^ All the above posts are possible or you may also have an incorrect shuttle/relief valve on the high pressure side/line that is typically marine specific and normally should follow any new non marine pumps around.

You have me wondering if I switched out the relief valve? Where would you get a replacement.

Relief valve plugged with very small metal filings...maybe from the old pump...putting back together now...hope it fixes the problem
