Bought Starcraft Chieftain with some issues due to improper winterization.
One of them, the steering oil cooler was by passed, I hooked it up but blew the return low pressure hose before the cooler. Turns out the oil cooler oil portion was mostly blocked due to the ice damage. I now have another cooler but my pump sound bad and i wish to replace it. Will a GM auto pump work?

I read in anthor post that someone with a 3l was able to use a ATSCO p/n 6251 from autozone, I don't know what the make is on a 3l the same as mine?

I verified the pump noise by removing the belt

Re: Power Steering pump question

Howdy,

There's really nothing special about a pump on any Merc or Volvo marine engine.

They use Eaton pumps among others.

All you have to do is find one that is the same mounting and swap the pulley. Here's some examples.

I would find the correct series and get one from Rock Auto or other auto parts place. I suppose you could also determine the model or type and get one from a wrecking yard too.

The other thing to consider is that if you have a failed pump you may also have debris in the whole system. You should completely disassemble and clean or flush the steering cyl and hoses/cooler before you put a new or rebuilt pump on it.

Regards,

Rick
