Hi,

I have a 1998 Sea Ray with a Merc 7.4L, water cooled. Very hard steering both directions most of the way through. Some spots are easier. Replaced Power Steering Pump and Power Steering Cylinder on advice of mechanic. Still has same symptoms. Could it be the steering cable binding somewhere?? Need help!

Ayuh,.... That's where your "Mechanic" should have Started.....

Disconnect the Cable from the Actuator,+ See which is Tight,...
It's probably the transom end of the Cable, where it goes thru the aluminum tube....
A Good Cleanin' might just "Fix" it....

Re: Power steering stiff

Can you tell me which tube you are speaking about? We installed a new power steering assembly, complete with ram and tube and valves. It came as a complete assembly. Is there another tube other than the one on the power steering assembly? Also, Looking at the old one, it is not painted phantom black, could be a replacement, but it is the late model assembly. Someone may have tried to fix before.

Are there other areas that could be binding that we could look for. We have already tried disconnecting the steering cable from the ram and the wheel turns easy. I can also move the drive by hand by moving the tiller with no binding. Is it possible just connecting back is enough to bind it up?? Is it a servicable item, or should I look at replacing the entire steering cable?

Thanks for any help!
