i have a 1993 mercruiser 5.7 Sn OF 277191 the power steering is real hard at low speed works fine at high speed

have checked and lubed the cable and steering points every thing moves freely .

first time i took the boat out the power steering pump was out of fluid PO left a bottle of trans fluid in the boat so i dumped that in .

just took the pump off and that spins freely like its not doing any thing so i want to put a new one on and have 2 questions

is that the same as a chevy truck pump and for that year am i suppose to use tranny fluid or power steering fluid

thanks for the help

Re: power steering

The pumps are all the same but the reservoir on the back are all different. You may find a automotive application with the same reservoir but even they use more than one in some years. If you get a seal kit (five "O" rings) you can change your reservoir to a new pump. Just remove the two studs and the fitting were high pressure hose attaches on the back of the pump (be careful when removing the fitting, there is a spring and a valve behind it) then tap the reservoir back carefully with a wooden block.
