Well I feel like I am almost there with my 1972 65 hp Johnson. At first it had slow speed problems but would really run on the top end, then I adjusted the carbs for great low and mid range put it never turned the rpms it did before on the top end. I rebuilt my carbs a few days ago and yesterday on the river it ran only slightly better. It was very slow to get on plane but ran good on the top end. I would be happy with its top speed if thats all it would do but about every 5 minutes or so, the engine will surge and want to run a lot faster, the surges will last about 1-2 seconds and do it off and on for 5 or 10 seconds then stop. This motor has never seemed like its getting as much fuel as it needs under throttle. It runs slightly faster when I pull the throttle back slightly from full. Everything on the fuel system from tank to carbs is new except for my fuel pump, the filter is also clean. Synk and link and timing is all adjusted to spec. Can a fuel pump do this to my engine? Also, I used to run 40:1 mix in it and it had the good top speed power, it seems like it dosent have as much power running 50:1. The middle cylinder is scored and has less compression so could running more oil help seal it up and make more power?<br />Thanks for your help.
