(Excuse my english, i'm french speaking!)

Follow the wires that cames from the power trim motor, there sould be a place under the cowl where you can disconnect them. Once disconnected, connect those that came from the power trim motor directly to a battery. If the motor goes up or down and then in the opposite direction when you invert the cables, it will tell you that the problem is in the remaining part of the system (from the connection to the switch). If it just goes up, the problem is somewhere between the connection and the cylinder.

It will also help if you could tell us your engine serial number, so we could know exactly wich kind of PTT unit you had.

If a trim motor runs in eithier direction(up or down)the motor is fine and you have a bad wire, connection or switch or soliniod

Where exacly is the soliniod? IM going to check the wires today to see if thats the problem, I hope it is, but if it's not, I was wondering where the soliniod sits on the unit.
Thanks for your replies,
BassMatt

Re: Power Tilt and Trim Trouble - Please HELP!

If the design is like my 96 Merc 60 hp I believe the problem is the relays. Which has happened to me before.

The relays are in the cowling and near the rear of the housing. They are attached to the housing bottom. There are 2 relays, one for up and one down, but they are the same type of relay.

Now for the problem - switch the relays to the opposing plug. Operate the trim unit. If it is the relay the opposite will happen. In your case the unit should go down and not up. If so,I would replace both relays. If one is bad the other will soon follow. Keep the old good one as a spare. This is what I did when my "up" relay failed.

If not, it is probably a switch issue. Use another switch if one is installed i.e. the motor, bow or throttle switch.

I hope this is helpful.

Ok, I worked with the switch, the part on the throttle that makes it go down and it didn't work. I forgot to switch them to see if it would go down on the opposite switch. Im going to go back outside and work with it yet again..hehe
Thanks for your help! BTW - where you can by a new switch? I have no clue.. :)
