I hope I posted this in the right place. But the question I have is I own a 1984 Johnson 90 hp and I was wondering is there fluid in the power tilt and trim unit on this motor that needs changing and or checking..If so where and how do you check and or change the fluid?
Also I changed the lower unit fluid this morning and filled it until it came out the top vent, I kept pumping a few more times to get a good solid flow to get all air pockets out, but when I went to disconnect the pump from the bottom some fluid escaped before I could get the screw back in,not to much just some. But when I take the vent screw out on the top to check no oil comes out,I added 1 more time to make sure it was full and got the screw in quicker this time. I guess what I am asking is it ok if when you pull the vent screw that oil doesnt come out or do I need to add more?
Thank you in advance.

Re: Power Tilt and Trim

To avoid losing gearlube, put the top oil level screw in before removing the drain/fill screw. You might still lose a very slight bit but that's taken into account.

The PTT.... Have the engine raised to its extreme up position, then fill the reservoir to overflowing. That's it as the unit is self bleeding.

The reservoir is the tall unit opposite the electric motor. The fill hole/screw is the obvious large screw in plain sight which has a sealing "O" Ring on the back of it.

The PTT lube can be purchased at your local Evinrude/Johnson dealership. The lube is never changed unless a problem develops necessitating the change.

Re: Power Tilt and Trim

Thank you Joe for your help. That answered my question fully about the lower unit, because I did get the top screw in first and then when you said that alittle loss was accounted for it made me feel better..
Thank you again.
