Power tilt lock

Hi All--

I did a search for this question, but didn't find it anywhere on the board, possibly because it's a fairly dumb question :) If I missed it someplace sorry.

I just acquired a 70Hp Evinrude, a 1992 I think from the model number (E70TLEND). The motor's in the up position with the swinging bracket / lock down and in place for travel. How do I release the lock and put the motor down? It has power trim and tilt. I tried going up higher on the power tilt button--motor doesn't move. Also tried lifting the lower unit by hand, which does give the bracket some wiggle room, but I don't see how to swing the bracket back so the motor can be put down.

Thanks for any info!

First raise the engine a little to take pressure off the tilt lock, take the lock off and lower the engine

He said the motor doesn't move when he tries to raise with power tilt.

I'm wondering - does the tilt make any sound when you try to raise it? Like it's trying to raise, but can't? Is it completely dead? Could be a power tilt malfunction.

I could be wrong. I believe the rams for the tilt trim mechanism need to move out fully before the motor will move upward. If when you attempt to raise the motor the tilt trim motor is making noise I would allow the motor 15 seconds or so to see if it moves up.

Re: Power tilt lock

Hi guys--

Ok, the power tilt and trim works fine--it's brand new, and I watched it go up and down when we demo'd the boat. When I press the up button, it hums but nothing moves. Same for down. When I lift the lower unit by hand the motor comes up about an inch or two then stops. What I can't figure out is how to get the bracket to go back to the position in which the mtor can go fully down. Are you saying I should just hold down the "up" switch on the power tilt longer?

Thanks!

I would try holding the "up" switch longer to raise the motor. Once the motor is raised, the tilt lock bracket can be just pushed back toward the motor and youll hear a spring like action as it returns to its unlocked position. You shold now be able to lower the motor with the "down" switch.
