Power Tilt only makes a Clicking Sound

I have a 77 Merc 50 hp w/power tilt and all I hear from it is a click that I think is coming from the little relay on the side of the electric motor when I try to use the trim. Yesterday it let my motor down reluctantly with a low battery, but today with a charged battery all I get is the click. Any thoughts? Where can I get a relay for this if that might be the problem?

I'm not fimiliar with your motor, but they usually use a solenoid for this function. You can try to jump across it to verify that, that is the problem.

If is does you solenoids, you could use an old Ford solenoid, but it will likely be much bigger and might not fit the spot. The plus is that they cost less than 10 bucks!

k

I got ahold of a used solenoid for this unit and it does exactly the same thing as the old solenoid and when I try to jump across the terminals I get nothing so I guess my motor is dead. This thing had served me well for at least 15 years. Anyone know how to pull the motor off the resevoir? Do I have to pull the cover plate with all the plumbing coming out of it that is over the resevoir to release the motor? I don't have a manual for this unit so I'm flying blind.

jkiam, I have never had the pleasure of disassembling these. However, I think the bottom of the pump unit unscrews and the motor is sealed inside a can attached to the pump resevoir. BoatUs and West Marine may have replacement motors, although you may need to buy the motor and pump resevoir as a unit.

My tilt was doing the same thing and all that was wrong was the brushes were dirty and sticky. Take the end cap off of the motor and clean the brushes and armiture.
