I've been reading up on how to refill my power tilt and trim and yes it does make sense but here's my issue.
I loosened off the manual refief srcew so I can lift my motor. Once I got power I tightened the srew and noticed oil dripping out. I cut the O-ring from loosening off to much. I replaced the O-ring and well to make a long story short I didn't tighten up the screw, tilted the motor and all the oil shot out.
I am trying to add new oil but the center piston will not lock up. Its like the releif screw is loose (but its tight). I've manually lifted the motor up and down tons of times. I hear oil pushing the air but were does it go? I've also keep adding oil until it runs out the fill hole. I don't see any oil leaking from the piston.
Anyone have any Idea??

I worked on mine Saturday. Try this: loosen the relief screw onthe side, lift motor and support on bracket. Tighten relief screw, remove fill screw and fill with ATF until it runs out. tighten, runthe motor up until it lifts and if it does, use the tilt up and down a few times. back to the bracket, fill soem more if it will take it.
Is there a SS tube at the bottom and is it crimped (damaged)?
POssible too your motor/pump is broken, so it sounds like it's running but it's not. If it's like mine (1988 70 hp) you have to pull the engine off just to get to one screw to pull off the motor!

I've got the two small pistons working but the one that tilts the motor still won't "lock up" I can't put any more oil in and like I said at the begining is like the relief srew is loose but its not. The tilt and trim motor was working fine until I broke that o ring. Motor sounds just like it did before all the oil leaked out. Whats the flat head screw for, on the bottom of the T&T motor?

Thanks for the help and quick response.

Re: Power tilt & trim 1987 60hp evinrude

I found this post from back in 2006. Please read this is the same problem that I have

"I have the same problem with my 85 Johnson OB 115Hp. I replaced the old o-ring on the manual release screw. Then I replaced the screw and now the trim works but not the tilt. I have filled the reservoir multiple times. I filled the reservoir with the engine in the up position closed the screw; let the engine drop down; tried to run the trim/tilt motor up with no movement; opened the screw; pulled up the engine; close the screw; fill the reservoir. I repeated this several times. Please someone help me."

There must be someone out there who has corrected this issue?

I've noticed that there 35 viewing to this thread but yet no one has any idea's well that fine cause I fixed the issue today. Thought I'd give er another go before I bring it in. AS I stated before the motor would tilt as if the releif srew was loose. I wasn't getting pressure. I took off the new o-ring and tightened up the relief screw and well.. It locked up. Turns out the o-ring I installed was too thick so I put on one size smaller and that's it, works like a charm! So if anyone else is having this issue make sure you put on the right size o-ring.:D
