Power Tilt Trim stuck - ideas?

Hi,

I replaced the motor on an older boat. The power tilt/trim was in unknown conditions. Turns out the motor was guarantted bad (had screw driver size hole in the housing).

I replaced the motor and now it looks like something is wrong with the center tilt cylinder.

Thoughts suggestions?

I'm pretty sure it's got the right amount of fluid in it. Originally the system had what appears regular engine oil. I read a lot about older 70's models simply having 10W 30. I placed Dextron 3 automatic transmission fluid (couldn't find 2) in it. I tried purging the assuming to be 10W 30 out through the side drain hole (fill from fill plug, purge through drain hole) until it started coming out red.

It should work like something like my other one:

The top is a 3 wire system, bottom 2.

I may just convert to 2 wire on this boat.

Have you tried holding it in the proper orientation in a vice?
Sounds like its stuck in an air pocket, have you tried loosening the manual relief valve, is it tight enough 45inch lbs.

As "Jones" suggests...... Put that unit in a normal vertical position. It will not function properly in that horizontal position.

Interesting, I ran across this posing this morning after I posted a simular T&T issue last night, I watched your videos and my T&T has the same symtoms. It was working fine before I replaced the O-rings and wiper seals on the trim cylinder and the tilt cylinders. All three were cracked and needed replacement. After reassembling and filling with T&T fluid, mine operated the same as the one you show in your video. Will be interested in what your outcome will be.

Good luck, Tom

A few minutes ago i tried again by placing the setup verticle in a vice.

It may be getting worse. Now when going down, the left lower trim cylinder goes down, then when it's the right side's turn, it goes at most 1/3 of the way and won't go further.

I think there is enough fluid in the setup?

The only thing that may be of value is initially when working with this, i recall the center cylinder being in the DOWN position and not moving. I yanked on it and the cylinder would move up (not down again). Maybe i blew a seal or sucked in a bunch of air? I forget if the fill plug was in or not.

Any thoughts?

Have the unit in a vertical position with all of the tilt/trim rams extended. Fill the reservoir and try again.

Re: Power Tilt Trim stuck - ideas?

Just did (again).

the manual says to start with the pistons in the down state. I try to go to the down state and the left cylinder goes down, but then the right only goes down about 1/3. as it's pumping if i take and open the manual relief screw, i can get it to go all the way down and somewhat stay (it creeps).

The manual then says once all the rams are down (The middle won't go down), then open the valve and go full up for 10 seconds.

I do that, and feels like i'm getting into a endless loop. I put fluid in but i think it's just the fluid that is drained out in my attempts to get the rams all down (only the small 2 get "down").

Still sounds like you don't have enough fluid in that unit. Stop draining it.

With no engine weight pressing down on that unit, the "Trim Rams" will only pull in one at a time, this is normal. But after the "Trim Rams" pull all the way in, then the "Tilt Cyl" should start to pull down.

With engine weight pressing down on the unit, the "Tilt Cyl" would pull down first, BUT with no engine weight pressing down, the "Trim Rams" pull in first.

Have the unit in the normal vertical position, fill the reservoir to overflowing, run the unit up and down 2 or 3 times, then refill to overflowing again.

If i didn't have enough fluid in it, would the lower right ram not go down? I have no clue how the internals on these work.

You cannot fill the reservoir when the rams are trimmed down, the rams must be all the way out in the fully raised up position.

If you're in a hurry, simply switch the electric motors with the other working unit.

I'm not really in a hurry, this was a winter project. I've been working on it over the winter when the weather's been okay. I really want to get the 3 wire system working. The 2 wire uses a relay box that is trickier to mount on the old crossflow's. I have a 76 powerhead with a 78 mid/lower. To adapt the power trim, i'm taking an access cover i got at a outboard bone yard for the starter solenoid and installing it on the starboard top powerhead access cover spot. Then mount the solinoid there. If i swap motors, then i have an assembly i don't know what's wrong with left over too. Then what to do with it? toss it in the recycling bin? nah.

I drained it once, started over, and only filled when the two rams were in the UP position, up down, up down etc. got the same thing.

could O-rings/seals/stuck valves bed doing this? I've read a few posts (some replied by Joe) and wondering what i'm up against. Those quarter size valve plugs seem impossible to get out. Nothing to grab to. I also have a spanner wrench in a bike kit to get the cylinders apart if i need to.

i swapped the other assembly with the 3 wire motor. I would like to know how i might fix the other though. the 2 wire motor i ripped off it works fine.
