Power tilt/trim upgrade?

Are there any options to switch my manual tilt to a power tilt aside from the CNC aftermarket tilt/trim? I have a '69 115 Evinrude. Is it possible to get one off of a junked motor and just swap? I'm over the having to manually lift my motor if I get kelp around the prop and lower unit. Plus because of where my bait tank is mounted it's a royal pain in the ***.

power tilt should be easy. power trim would be difficult. up under your engine I think there is one or two shock absorbers. they make tilt cylinders of same size. just swap them out. on the side of your engine i think there is a set of three unused holes in a small 1-1/2" triangle pattern. they sell an electric pump (volvo aq290) that will fit those holes for $150ish on ebay. now all you need is a few feet of CuNi brake tubing from a volvo dealer and a double lap flaring tool.

Boobie, after rebuilding the carbs, new fuel lines, plugs and a decarb she runs great. There is nothing wrong with the engine. As for shocks on this motor there are none. It does have the three hole triangle on it.

You could look around for a used power tilt that will fit it. If you want tilt and trim CMC might be a good bet. I've installed them and they're simple.

different brackets from picture? or just no shocks?

the shocks in picture can be replaced with rams off evinrude johnson chrysler force or small mercury engines. the rams can be had in the $20-$50ea range. used pumps are probably not worth the effort. Prestolite designed the most of the pumps to go 20 years. some 1970-1981 have 30 year check valves but that doesn't really help either. All the old prestolites are running on borrowed time. they are rebuildable but for a tilt only application, the chinese AQ290 pump is more than adequate. the pump is only $110 but you'll want to use relay wiring harness ($30) with some 4pin N.O. relays ($15). Net cost should be $200ish and a bucket of elbow grease. that is - - if you have brackets that can take shock absorbers.

Re: Power tilt/trim upgrade?

I'm going to have to look around. There is a marine second hand shop down in Point Loma. Maybe I can find a used unit in decent shape that will bolt up to the same holes. I looked at the CMC option but I really wasn't feeling the price. They also stick out like a jack plate. I really don't need a jack plate with this boat. At the same time I guess begers can't be choosers. From what year to what year are the transom mounts interchangeable? It looks to me like my motor thru the early nineties.

I will do some research on what you suggested RRit.

I had a '73 Johnson 85 with no TnT. I looked for years for a reasonably priced OEM unit to upgrade it. Never happened. Those pre-'78 units go for $400+ on ebay sometimes even in unknown working condition. I gave up. The good news on the CMC units is that they hold their value really well so if you get a newer motor someday with TnT, you can likely sell the CMC unit for close to what you paid for it. However, they are friggin' expensive.

$400? sheesh. That's like selling chainsaws after a hurricane.

i'm clearing out the widows and orphans this month to make room for upcoming season. Everything older than 1990 is hitting ebay, recycling, or trash bins. one of orphans is a 1970's twin ram system. I still have to rebuild the valve body before it is finished. I'll dump it on ebay for 200-250. If you spend $400+ then spend it on a jackplate or something. These systems are not well designed enough to justify spending that much.

Re: Power tilt/trim upgrade?

RRit, I wouldn't spend that much. Fortunately my "new" boat has an '81 with TnT and it's great.

I'd advise you not to do a buy it now on ebay with that old twin ram. Do a straight auction and let the money roll in!

it's already listed. I wouldn't feel right taking that much money for one. IMO, it's a grab bag of fittings, adapters, half baked ideas, and duct tape. If somebody gave me more money for one of those than a good jack-plate then i would feel like I cheated them.

Did that e-bay auction finish already? do you have a link if it is still active?

Re: Power tilt/trim upgrade?

As of right now I put this upgrade on the back burner. We are moving back to Arkansas on the 10th and getting married on the 23rd so until that chaos subsides I'm going to have to wait. On the plus side my soon to be brother in law has a CMC unit he said he might let go super cheap. If so I think I'm going to go that route.
