Power Trim Evinrude 200

I posted a question on this and should not have combined it with an unrelated question, so this is a follow up to the same issue, by itself. This is a great site and I get a lot from it.

OKAY, the down function on my tilt/trim is spotty and inconsistent, sometimes taking a few pushes of the button before the motor lets the engine down. Same problem no matter which button I use.

I pulled the relays, and the sockets are good, and receiving current. I'll check the relays, themselves, and ohms today. It would seem, however, that a bad relay would always be bad, not just sometime.

My manual suggests removing the blue/green wires at the pump housing. There isn't much room, but I suppose I'll manage. What am I looking for there? Frayed wires?

The "up" function works perfectly.

I'm going to the lake, no excuses this time. Can I assume that if for some crazy reason my motor won't lower that I could loosen the manual relief valve and get hooked back up to my trailer?

In theory that is the way to do it. But it might be a heavy lift getting it up!!!

Hmmm. Are you saying that after I loosen the relief valve, that even if I then re-tighten it, I won't have a working "up motor" either?

You did not mention that you ran the test of swapping the relays.

I did not swap them, but I checked them per the manual. Continuity, with current, etc. Both were good. When I push the buttons on the down movement, the pump sort sort of ticks, creaks or scratches, then goes. Like the little train that could. To me, it sounds like either a bad connection or some other issue.

I can't ever check the fluid level because no matter what angle I'm on, the fluid runs out the reservoir. It's as if it's too full. So I doubt that is the issue.

By the way, the up relay is on the left, and the down on the right, correct? Evinrude 200 HP Vindicator.

The relays are both the same. They can be swapped for testing purposes. When the fluid runs out of the reservoir, does it appear milky?

No, it appears like new. As I mentioned in another post, I just wonder if my tilt and trim motor is somehow binding. I'm just not finding a loose or bad wire--but I can't seem to get to the ones right at the motor and tilt limit switch.

By the way, if I use that manual relief valve will the motor come down slowly, or with a thud!

I just realized that I have another potentially important question:

I have two wires, one a Red wire and the other a Red/Purple wire that come together after the two relays for my Tilt and Trim setup. They meet at a fuse link. I would think that there should be continuity between the two sides of the fuse link, where the two wire come in to meet. I have no continuity there between the two sides of the fuse (meaning between the two wires).

Is this a fuse that has continuity only when some other component is first energized? For instance, must I push in the TNT switches?

Is this a clue to something wrong?


PS About the manual release. On a large motor I could see needing to keep your hands out the way!
