I need to remove the power trim motor fom a 1988 75 horse mariner. Will I need to remove the motor from the transom althogether or will loosening the bolts be enough to get to the back mounting bolt that holds the trim motor in place with an allen wrench. Also is there anyone out there who has dissassembled and rebuilt a trim motor that can tell me what to look for to see why it doesnt work at all. When I put power directly to the green or blue line nothing happens. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: power trim motor removal

There was no listing for a 75HP motor in 1988. You might verify those facts.

You should be able to remove the whole PTT unit by tilting the motor all the way up and manually locking it, blocking the tilt tube to the transom, and removing the right side transom bracket.

Re: power trim motor removal

I don't mean to hi-jack this one but I have a 1987 Mariner which I attempted to remove the PTT with no success. This is what I did in my attempt to remove it:

Disconnected the PTT wiring harness from Motor.

Manually raised and locked the motor in full upright position

Remove 6 bolts (3 per side) holding the PTT to the motor

Attempted to remove the main hydrolic piston from the Motor by popping out what appeared to be a lock pin in the centre of the shaft. This pin would not budge when I hit it with a hammer and punch.

Also, if I am successful in getting pass this point, how do I manuver the PTT so the manual release screw and PTT oil fill cap can pass through the PTT harness?

Any assistance is very much appreciated.

Andre, That pin needs to come out. Also, sometimes you need to remove the starboard transom clamp to get the PTT unit off.
