Hi, my power trim motor will move in one direction with the up switch but only click the solenoid with the down switch. I have a 1977 mercury 115 horse 1150 outboard. Is the power trim motor supposed to move in both directions? If so, could my wiring be off?

Re: Power Trim Motor

The motor should run in both directions. I sounds like the selenoid for the down switch is not makeing good contact. you can jump across the two big posts and it should run. If it does your selenoid is bad. There should be a selenoid for the up and one for the down. find which one is for the down by having someone switch it and feel which one clicks in the down direction and jump across the big posts with a screwdriver. if it runs, replace the selenoid.

Re: Power Trim Motor

72GT115, The PTT unit on my '77 1500 only has one solenoid, for the up direction. I would presume your PTT unit would be the same. On those motors, black is common and grounded. Green is one direction and Blue is the other direction, I cannot remember which is which. You need to check to make sure both green and blue get power when the switch is pressed. If you pull the plug on the PTT motor, and jumper from the verticle (power) slot to the bottom horizontal slot the motor should turn in the down position (no solenoid in the circuit). You will also notice the gauge of the down wire is heaver than the gauge of the up wire.
