Power Trim not responding, able to hear relays on engine clicks

I was getting ready to hit the water today and the power trim tilt is not working. I tried to replace with different relays on the engine ( 95 Johnson OceanRunner 60 degrees 115hp). I hear both on them clickings when pressing up or down button, but the trim doesn't response. Battery is okay, able to crank engine.

Anyone know if my trim is dead or something I need to check? I check all cables inside engine. Not sure what's going on, was working perfectly fine other day. Thanks all.

Did you check the blue and green wire connection just under the black relay box on the engine? Take it apart and see if it has lost connection; I spray battery cleaner in both parts of the plug. You can also try tapping (lightly) the trim motor with a small hammer or a large screwdriver as one of the brushes may be stuck and not making a connection. Good luck

Just saw a small hole in motor housing itself, all rusted around there. I check the reservoir and it is still redish. Do I have to replace everything or just the motor itself ? It has four screws on it, so I assume you can just replace the motor? Please help thanks all.

Looks that motor is toast and will need to be replaced; only the motor needs to be replaced not the whole unit. you'll probably have to remove the unit from betwee the brackets to get to the screws holding the motor on. You only need to turn the manual relese screw out no more than 2 turns; not all the way out. Be patient and good luck.

If my manual screw is impossible to turn since its flat Phillips can I unscrew the resevoir screw to push engine up.

Your manual release should be a slotted screw, not phillips. It should be on the port side mtr bracket.

You are right thanks, I meant slotted. It won't turn, no matter what. Its almost busted at this point. Not sure what OMC was thinking when they chose slotted over a 10mm or just a regular screw head. Still trying to figure out how to lift up engine at this point.

Any suggestion as to go aftermarket on the motor or OEM brand OEM motor? Thanks.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago except I did not have enough clearance to unscrew the manual release. I don't think you are going to be able to unscrew the reservoir cap and push the motor.

I rented an engine crane from the local auto parts store and used that to lift the motor. I only disconnected as much as was required to move the engine a few inches to let me get in and do the job.

I bought an OEM motor for mine. I paid $265 from the local dealer but afterwards I found they were a lot cheaper over the internet. Also they sell an O-Ring and Brush kit for the motors but at the time I bought mine I didn't know that.

********* sells them for $165 last time I looked. Look on the starboard transom bracket and see if you have a release valve screw; yours may be different but mine is on the starboard side.

About 156 for an ARCO aftermarket brand or SIERRA. http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...on&section=Power+Trim/tilt+Hydraulic+Assembly

I was trying to push out the TILT TRIM pin and push the the engine up so I can access the motor. Is this a good idea? The manual release screw - Give up. Its dead and can't turn. After taking out the Ring Retaining from TILT pin, hitting it doesn't seem to move. Does it come out either directions? Thanks.

I definitely paid way to much. Inexperience and I wanted the part fast because I wanted to get the boat in the water ASAP.

My transom is notched so there was no way I was going to get the pins out with the motor mounted on the boat. Not enough room on either side to slide the pins out. Not sure which pin you are talking about. I have a pin that stops the maximum downward movement of the motor. When there is no pressure on it the pin rotates freely and if I had enough clearance it would slide right out. I have attached a picture and if that is the pin below the cylinders it should slide either way.

If it is the pin on the top of cylinder that lifts the motor I looked at mine and it seems it should come out in either direction. If there is a load on it, the weight of the motor, you are going to have to put something under the bottom of the lower unit and lift a little I would think to take the pressure off the pin and also so the motor doesn't slam down once the pin is removed.

Re: Power Trim not responding, able to hear relays on engine clicks

In your attached picture you are showing a motor raised, is this your motor and is it still in that position? If so, can you get a screwdriver on all four of the screws to take the motor off? If not then yes the engine will have raise and be supported some way. The tilt pin on the main ram will come out from any direction but it is hard to get them out. I use a 12" mild steel drift pin and a heavy hammer and really hit it hard; again the weight must be off the pin for it to come out. i-boats has these motors at good prices and really fast delivery. Good luck.

Re: Power Trim not responding, able to hear relays on engine clicks

I use a larger brass drift and a big hammer to drive them out. With the brass they will mushroom out first before the pin. If the pin gets mushroomed, you got big probs. Acy/Oxy torches also really help.

Re: Power Trim not responding, able to hear relays on engine clicks

Guys thanks for all the suggestions. I finally got the bad trim motor out by using a Sawzall and cut the rusted motor right above the four screws holding it in place. Removing it gives me clearance to remove the screws and hopefully raise the unit up to install the last screw in the corner once new motor comes (only able to screw in 3 screws once new motor comes due to one in rear corner, just ordered from amazon prime, will be here Tuesday, SIERRA brand, $150.)

QUESTION: My manual release screw is stuck and probably never coming out. My fluid is low since I remove the fill cap and trim motor out (fluid gushed out). What's the best way to add / change fluid at this point? I realize you need to bring engine all the way before adding fluid to fill hole, but with the little fluid I have left inside the system, can the new motor push the engine up once it is install? Thanks all.

Try it and see how far it goes. If you have to, keep on adding fluid till its up. Top it off and cycle it up & down 5 times.
