Power trim not working, bad fluid?

At the end of last season I went to pull the boat out of the water and the power trim would not lift the drive.
I found the fluid was bad so I drained it and filled it a few times. It was fine all year but when I pulled it out of the water it did the same thing.

The fluid didn't look too bad. I have cycled through three quarts of 10w-30 and it is still straining to lift the drive.

Can I remove the return line at the pump and and use it to drain all the fluid?

Is they a way to test for pump issues?

What kind of drive do you have, that will clue us in on which trim system you have. If the trim pump is straining you could have sticky cylinder rams, a trim pump motor problem, an electrical problem... Lots of possibilities.
Yes there are tests.

Don't think motor oil is the thing to use. From what you describe I would look for air in the system and a leak.
