I just bought a 91 19ft Starcraft Eurostar with a 4.3L Mercruiser. The power trim does not work and I don't hear anything when I push the button. Is this probably an electrical problem?

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... Where abouts in Maine..??

Yer problem is more than likely corroded wiring ends somewhere in the circuits...
Usually, just pullin' the wires, 'n sandin' 'n cleanin' 'em is enough...
I always slather grease on 'em when done...
Keeps the corrosion away longer...

Have you verified 12v power coming in to the solenoid? How about the solenoid itself- I know you said you don't hear anything, but if you listen carefully do you a hear a "click"? If you jump the terminals for either the up or down solenoid (easy search topic) does the pump respond?

I'm from Maine too....but now live in South Carolina where its wicked hot!

Re: Power Trim not working

Here is the troubleshooting chart for the Gen II.

You wouldn't have the pdf for the alpha 1 handy would you?? :) edit: no worries - see update below ;0)

I just finished fault finding with the gen 2 pdf - My symptoms are that the trailer switch will raise her up, the trim (down) switch will lower it, but the trim "up" switch is inoperative - when lowering, the pump does not cut out at full down but continues with a change in the sound pitch (normal? I'm new to the whole trim things) - continuity check when the leads are disconnected shows an open circuit and the gen 2 pdf says replace the limiting switch (apparently I need to replace both at the same time and this requires pulling the leg)

I guess that what I really want to verify is that "this" part of the troubleshooting is the same on alpha 1's as it is on the gen 2's?

If I have to pull the leg, I might as well run without for a few weeks till I do winterizing anywho?? Won't hurt anything other than slowing me down a bit correct?

UPDATE: Found a picture to verify what leg I have and apparently I have the gen II - which is good cuz the pdf is correct
Also did a bit more poking around now that I found out what the switches look like (doh!) It's definitely the switch wiring as I found one sheered right off at the gimble :0/

So back to the original kestion - do I "have" to pull the leg and will it hurt to run without the trim for a few weeks?

Thanks in advance folks - loving this place already :)

Re: Power Trim not working

Sounds like you trim limit switch is out of range, has broken leads, or is faulty. The limit switch is mounted on the port side of the gimbal ring on an Alpha I and controls the range in which the lower unit is allowed to go. If it is out of range or broken, you'll find that the up/down rocker switch might not work correctly.

I don't think the "up" solenoid is failing as the trailer button brings up your lower unit. Replacement limit switches are available here on iboats and are easy to install.

Ayuh,.... I ditch the trim limit switch, 'n the trim indicator on my drive years ago...
I've got a trim switch that goes up, when pushed, 'n down when pushed...
The only difference is, it don't stop 1/2 way up...
Ya can by-pass it inside the transom, 'n forget about entirely if ya want, which is what I did...

'n No, the motor only changes pitch when full down, it don't shut itself off...
Goin' up, it'll go into overload at the top,...
When it does, tap the down button to relieve the pressure...

hehehe - 'exactly what I just finished doing once my little pee brain said"hey, if it wants to see continuity, give it continuity" Works like a charm - I "may" do the switch if I ever have the leg off for other reasons but I'm good with listening for the tone for now :0)

Now THAT'S good to know - muchos gracias :0)

Battery's charging and she's good to go next decent day I get <huge grin> Nothing like getting things ready for a shakedown on a new to me boat :0)

Thanks folks!

Re: Power Trim not working

Had it checked out when I had the boat winterized and it seems to be just the guage and from what the guy was telling me it is a very complicated and expensive to replace the guage.
