I have a new to me 1976 Glasply with the 140 hp Mercruiser. I have a Clymer manual which as most of you know is very vague! My questions are on the power trim. After running the engine and bringing it up to temperature yesterday, I shut off the engine and opened the fill plug on the power trim unit :( and oil squirted out under pressure. I quickly replaced the plug. The oil was reddish in color (hydraulic fluid?). The wording on the housing of the unit says to use 20w motor oil. Now to the questions.

1: Would hydraulic oil work?
2: How do you check the oil level in the unit?
3: Will I now need to bleed the lines?

Thank you for any help.

It sounds like someone put ATF in the trimpump instead of oil. You can drain the pump and lines and cylinders by taking lines off the cylinders and moving by hand, refill with oil and you should be ok. They are self bleeding during operation.
This is out of the Mercruiser manual.
You should junk your Clymer manual and get a real one.
