I have a 1988 Mariner. Power trim not working, relays pulling in and voltage going to motor. Tried to remove trim unit from motor but can not get pin out of tilt cyl. Any tips or tech help on getting pin out with motor on boat.

Re: Power trim problem

I have the same problem with my 1989 Mercury. Parked it for the winter and now the motor will not move. I have found a similar post here doing a search, with the same problems you are having. They were able to move the right bracket over far enough to get the motor off the pump. Ended up being stuck brushes.

I was able to get the cross pin out of mine, but have not tried to remove the retaining pin. I used a dremel tool to grind down the end of the pin. It looked as though a previous owner had the same problem and mushroomed the pin trying to remove it themselves. I used a small hammer and a nail set to push the pin back. I just hope it is far enough back to get the retaing pin out.

Hope this can be of some help.

Thanks for the info I tried to do the same thing but the mount will not allow me to get to the back screw on motor. Looking like removing motor is only way to get to back screw.

Do you have a service manual? I have a SELOC from the local library. It says to C-clamp the swivel bracket to the transom, before removing the mounting bolts. Finding a C-clamp big/deep enough is difficult. I block the bottom of the swivel bracket with a 2x4 and raise the trailer jack.

I can't seem to get the piston retaining pin out. I believe that I have the cross pin out far enough, but it does not want to move.

I looked at that but I don't think the motor mount will swing out enough to get to the back trim motor screw.

No service manual. The retaining pin is what I'm having a problem getting out. Used a floor jack to move motor up, no room to swing hammer and hold punch. If I could remove pin I think trim unit would drop out the bottom.

I was able to remove my trim motor today by just moving the right bracket over to the side. The four screws(through bolts) on top of the (square) motor and the two allen bolts from the end frame cap all were removed with moving the bracket over. The tilt tube nut has to be at the end of the threads, I also did this without blocking with the 2x4 and c-clamp.

When I lifted the motor off of the end frame cap, a bunch of water came out. It smelled burnt and rusty. I was actually glad to see the water, now I knew why the motor had failed. Water did not get into the pump, the seal of the end frame cap and armature shaft held.

I took the motor to a local automotive starter/altenator repair shop and a $65rebuild later, they say it runs like a champ. Time will tell. I plan to use the same gasket between the end frame cap and motor. I will use a gasket sealer (RTV blue maybe) on the gasket and screws, probably all over the place. This isn't the first time the motor was apart. Wires had butt connectors on them and were pushing down on the brushes and springs.
