Power trim problems

I have a 1972 gulfstream with a mercruiser 165...the motor is new and outdrive is re-bilt...my problem is the power trim it goes up but not out n down at the switch...if I jump the solenoids I am able to have full motion...is the switch bad? How do I test it to save from finding something I might not find?

Go up to the adults only sticky at the top of this forum, and download an OEM service manual for your engine and drive.
There is complete details for troublshooting the trim system to find the cause.
