Power Trim Problems

Hello,

I am in the process of getting a 1980 Champion Bass Boat back onto the water. It is equipped with a 1984 Mercury Black Max 200 Outboard. The main problem is that it has been sitting for far too long.

Today, after replacing a broken fuel line, I decided to hook a battery up and see if I could get the outboard trimmed up so that I could replace the water pump. After hooking up the power, I've found that the power trim is no longer working.

Many of the connections in and around the solenoids were corroded, so I have taken them off individually and cleaned them back to a shiny finish.

When I hit the trim button, I can hear the solenoid click but I don't believe the motor is running and the engine does not tilt up or down.

If I hit the trailer switch, I can again hear a solenoid engage, but no movement of the outboard.

I can't remember at the moment what direction, but I only hear the solenoid engage when I hit the trim button in one direction, it doesn't engage when pushed the other way.

Using a multimeter, I have checked the voltage going to the power trim motor. The motor is a 3 wire unit, and I have around 12.5v when the solenoid engages.

This being the case, I am inclined to believe that the motor itself may be the problem in this case. If anyone knows what motor I need to look for (i.e. part number, link, etc) I would appreciate it.

If someone feels that I am off-base with my troubleshooting and has a suggestion to make, that would be appreciated as well. I am trying to keep from having to take the boat in to a marine mechanic if at all possible.

Thanks.

Re: Power Trim Problems

Common problem...corrosion builds between the armature and the (field and frame) and prohibits the completion of the electromagnet field. Sometimes a slight "tap" on the field and frame will jar the armature to pick this energy up and spin...if you can get it to start turning the armature then it will self clean from there. BUT, everyone with TNT should learn how a solenoid works and how the control buttons control the solenoids...To learn the solenoid cuts troubleshooting in half...if not more..!!!

Re: Power Trim Problems

I was able to find a few free moments this evening to once again try to troubleshoot the power tilt & trim assembly. After trying to manually start the motor and still not hearing the motor run, I decided to pull the entire assembly so that I could get to the motor.

The motor felt stiff and didn't want to turn. The black coating on the chassis was falling off in large flakes.

I have taken some pictures and uploaded them in this thread.

If anyone knows the part number of the replacement motor or a location to purchase one, I would greatly appreciate it.

Monk, if you still think this motor can work again, I would appreciate any advice you would care to give me.

Thanks again.

Re: Power Trim Problems

Monk, I wanted to reply back and thank you for your advice and for replying to this thread.

Yesterday I had a few moments free and took that time to check over the motor with a multimeter. I cleaned the motor up and was able to get it running without any problems. I installed the motor and pump assembly this evening and now my trim and tilt is working 100%.
