Hi can anyone help!!!! I have just purchased a volvo penta power trim pump,to replace my bmw pump. The only problem i have is with the wiring up,as on the bmw pump you had two live wires coming out of the pump for up and down, and the unit was earthed through the body of the pump.Unlike the new one which i have sussed out you have to reverse the polarity to make it do this:Can anyone explain how this is wired,or let me know were i can download a diagram. Many thanks

Re: power trim pump

Depending on what type pump you have, Volvo's normal method is to use 2 relays that switch the hot and ground. I can post the diagram later, i'm at work and don't have access to my computer.

Re: power trim pump

Come on guys, I worked from 9 till 2, 3 times this week, and now I'm home. Even in the summer I don't do a 40 hour week. Couldn't retire, too many new toys wanted after the move from Alaska. Now I am done .............. till next year anyway.

Ok, enough of the hijack, I gotta find that wiring diagram for banny

Ok banny, here we go. That pn you gave didn't bring up anything, so will assume for now (Danger Will Robinson) that you have a pump like the one in the drawing.
I made this drawing for a friend to wire his trim pump without the OMC style circuit breaker/relay assembly. You can use standard automotive/Bosch style relays and even use crimp type spade connectors for the relays if you don't have sockets for them. This system changes any 2 wire motors direction by changing both Positive and negative.

Re: power trim pump

Good Diagram.
and here I thought I was the only one with a 25 hour work week :)
right now I am sitting in warm Caracas Venezuela preparing for a snook and tarpon trip to Tachagua(sp?) Lagoon in Rio Chico then on the 29th its off to Saranda lodge on lake Guri for a bit of peacock bass ;).
one day DonS oughta join me in the jungle ;)
at least its warm :).
but back to the diagram, OMC and volvo used the same set up for years. the OMC 2 wire outboard relay box will aslo work and they can be had reasonably and come pre-wired with pigtails.
the outbord box was used about 25 years on everything from the 40 to the 225 with 2 wire trim motors.
its a mod I have made before. the box can mount anywhere and is easy to wire in.

Ahhh, I thought that was you rodbolt. Why the 1.0? Forget your password ?
It would be fun to visit and fish that area, but I really don't see it happening in my lifetime. But I have learned to Never say Never.

I'll have to look up one of those OMC relay boxes, never remember even seeing one before, and I have a 60 johnson on my boat.

Re: power trim pump

yea rodbolt1.0 is me without my password :).
cant remember it as my home computer does. but I am in caracas VE today heading down for tachiregua lagoon in Rio Chico for a bit of fishing. also got to look at an apt there.
dont like the cold anymore.
nice thing about the OMC relay box assy is its selfcontained and has all the correct wire colors and pigtails already in place, that and thousands are avalible for pennies on the dollar.
best ones are from the V OMC motors but the others will work.
dont say anything but they can also replace some of the horrendusly expensive yamaha relay boxs :). not that I would ever do such a thing :).
