Power trim switch problem with 2000 Mercury 200HP

When I adjust the motor with the power trim switch on the throttle handle, it works fine, but if I use the switch on the side of the motor, it hesitates and I have to push it several times. Sometimes the trim (on the side of the motor) just comes on automatically to lower the motor and the pump motor keeps running after the motor is all the way down. I have checked the switch for stickiness and it seems ok. What could be wrong? Thanks a lot.

I think I should check on the relays next.

Intermittant functioning of the trim switch on the motor may be checked with either a test light or an Ohm's meter. I suspect that the switch is failing because you stated that the trim works correctly using the control mounted switch.

A 'phantom' operation of a trim switch is possible when the broken contacts iin a failing switch jiggle just right and make the contact. The system operates as if you are leaning on the switch.

Test the switch to verify function, un-plug the switch and see if your 'phantom' disappears.

Thanks CharlieB. I will remove the switch and give it a test today. I think you are right since the relays work with the switch on the throttle.
