Power trim/tilt drops

I have a 2005 25HP BigFoot with power tilt/trim.

If I set the tilt up for low water run & get the throttle to 1/2 it drops the motor to full vertical position. The boat weights about 1000#.

But if I dock the boat & set the tilt up it will stay that way for days.

I have been told Merc designed the tilt not to stay up when at 1/2 throttle or more. Is this correct or is something wrong?
I could not find any adjustments for the tilt motor in the manual.

The motor has 14 hours on it. The dealer where I purchased it has no Southern Hospitality.

Thanks,

Re: Power trim/tilt drops

Then the power trim/tilt is only to be used when the boat is not moving??

Why then is it allowed to work while the motor is running?

I thought it was to provide operation in low/shallow water & to get the most efficient angle for the boat/motor operation.

My old manual tilt had a lock for any angle operation.

Thanks for your input,

Is the 2005 merc 25HP bigfoot/power tilt supposed to run at any speed with the motor at <45 degree tilt?

Mine will not run at any speed with any tilt.

But the tilt works & will hold for many days at the dock.

Anyone?

Rednecker,

not sure if this helps but here goes a couple of thoughts:

1. My Mariner 40 4Cyl also has power tilt and I cursed it for weeks because the minute I got up any speed the tilt dropped straight back; then I read the manual; above 2000rpm it will drop to a maximum 20 degree tilt due to safety reasons.

2. Since it's a 2005 engine go back to the store and get them to check it over? Just in case?

Sorry, it's all I can think of; full of the dreaded 'flu bug and head feels full of cotton wool............

Re: Power trim/tilt drops

Thanks for the update.

I guess I just paid a lot of money for a useless power trim. Why do people need a trim guage if the trim will not stay set at a decent speed?

I purchased the motor from Ed's Super Marine Store in Richmond. The guys at their dock would not even take off the cardboard carton & help load it in my truck. They took a fork lift & moved it to the center of their parking lot & left it there.

If I had not waited a month for the motor & prepaid for it I would have left it.

My wife & I were trying to remove the cardboard carton with no tools & several people watched us. Finally, after about 10 minutes, the salesman we dealt with got a knife & came out to help. Between the three of us we got it in the pickup truck & tied down. It weights about 180#.

The pickup had a topper & it was 3" too low for the cardboard carton to fit.

So I do not think I will ever be back to Ed's for any reason.

The motor is great other than the trim/tilt thing.

Thanks again for the reply.

Re: Power trim/tilt drops

Ok, I got it now. Merc must have been sued & lost a pile of money for letting the trim stay up.

The trim setting is now 20 degree max. If the trim is more than 20 degrees & the motor RPM goes over about 2000 it drops the trim back to 20 degrees..

Anything over 20 degrees up to 90 degrees is called tilt.

Since the transom I have has about a 20 degree reverse slant then the max trim I can get is vertical. WOW, that is good for the money spent.

If I can not find an adjustment to set the 20 ^ out from vertical then I have to add a 3" spacer for the bottom motor mount bolt to get the trim motor to the vertical position as the default instead of -20 degrees..

If motors are to be run from vertical to trim up, WHY are the transoms slanted back about 20 degrees at the top?

The more I think I know, the less it makes sense.

Re: Power trim/tilt drops

Perhaps someone knows how to disable the tilt sensor?

That would allow the engine to run above 20 degree tilt at more than 2000 rpm???

Anybody got any clues?
