power trim/tilt

Hello again:

You folks have been so helpful I feel bad about asking another question. But,,,,,, I have a 1987 Johnson 110 hp outboard. It runs great and I love the thing. Bought it new way back then and have it mounted perfectly on my little bay boat. However, it does not have power trim/tilt.

I like fishing shallow marsh waters, but raising and lowering the motor by hand is a pain.

1. Can power trim/tilt be added to that old an engine ?

2. Would it require removing the engine and remounting ? (I'd really prefer not to take the engine off.)

3. Does anyone know of an after-market unit that can be added to an existing motor without remounting hassle ?

I've heard of hand pumped units which would fit the bill, but can't find out where to get information or buy one.

Newt,

There are plenty of TNT units available on ebay. That requires some work to install them. You may be able to leave the engine on the boat to install.

There are aftermarket units. They will require a dismount and remount. The most popular unit is from CMC. It is available right here on iboats. Go to the marine mall and type in "power tilt" in the search area. You would need a CMC PT-130.

The 110 is still a viable engine with lots of parts on the used market.

I have an 85 70hp that i added an oem i bought off e-bay.
it was cheaper than aftermarket options and looks original.
It was an easy bolt on.
i did not have to remove the motor to install it.

you will need the relay box too.
i rigged up my own up-down switch.
i think (don't quote me on this) 1982-1990? 70-150hp all use the same power trim unit.
here is one on e-bay

Re: power trim/tilt

It's not difficult to do. I put a power trim assembley from an 80's era Merc on my 69 merc. You just have to research what fits, and get one off of Ebay. You may or may not have to remove the motor, depending on setup, but don't let that disuade you. That is what God made engine lift rentals for. The payoff is so worth the work. I had to dismantle my outboard to do mine, and it was worth every second....
