Powered Subwoofer and speaker install

Hello gang,

So I purchased a marine rated stereo for my 1999 Bayliner Capri 1950. Two of the speakers will mount in stock location by rear seats. I had hoped to mount the other 5.25" Polk marine speakers to the right of the instrument cluster, above and left of the throttle, on the padded area just below the side glass. (does that make sense?) Has anyone put speakers there? Also I would like to put a Sub in the boat. Anyone have recommendations? I've been looking at powered units in small enclosures, units w/o amps (Inside an enclosed in cabinet with separate amp) And speakers that require a cut-out that mount in the boat. I thought of a few locations... Possibly in the engine bay enclosure port side, under rear seat? There is a box port and starboard sides in the stern that hold the seal up. (not sure what's in there?) Also a small enclosure under the stern seats, and finally mounted in the bow area on one of the side walls below the seats. Also gonna start my first fiberglass project. I'm making the /stern/starboard side access area into a battery storage area for my trolling motor. Capri 1954 has this built in with breaker just above. Of course my boat only has the finished off battery area on port side. =-(

Any ideas or advice would be great!

Thanks in advance!

Have a great weekend!

.. hiya bear

can't say about your woof, space is precious in a 1950 so maybe convert a seat base to a sub cab? don't know a good place where water and feet don?t tread.. I can say that my polks put out a good amount of bass. their married to a kicker amp and Panasonic receiver. the first two are under the rear seats as you stated, my other two are mounted up front in the bow area pedestals (where cushions are). It sounds great and remains pretty dry. Third season, no issues. Use ss screws and seal your cutouts with a good paint before mounting.

So I can use the drivers or pasenger seat base to put a sub into? No problem if I cut a hole there? And you said two of your speakers are located under the stern seats correct? Or in the stock location on the side panels in front of the stern seats? Do you have pics of the bow mounted speakers? Thanks for the cool ideas!

... hehe that i did not say, a seat-base sub was just a suggestion. i'll snap a couple pics of my setup over the weekend and post up. one thing i wish i had was better LCD contrast on my display. the sun makes it pretty tuff to see sometimes. what marine receiver did you get?

Sony CDX-M10 Marine Head Unit

So not a good idea? I think the seat base is a great idea.... Or is this not a good location for some reason? A good grill should protect it right?? Thanks for taking some pics...

... i think it would be a good idea also. just dont know how much open space is in there for a sub. a custom seatbase would be some work but totally dope(meaning way nice) if it also housed the amp. yup a good grill guard should protect a speaker.

that unit looks like an excellent value at around a hundred bucks.

Cool,

So now I need to check somehow to see if the seat base will work. Maybe i should remove the seat and make a test hole from the top? It looks like I should be able to have a nice sounding system for ~ $500. The most expensive conponent will be the sub and amp. Do you like your Polk speakers? I bought 2 pair of the DB-521's for $110. I read a plethora of positive reviews, so I went for it. I'm thinking the passenger side seat base would be best, as it's close to the head unit and battery.

OK here are a few pics, i like my Polks a lot! They are a stumpy bunch and can handle the wattage. I made a mistake on my receiver, its a Pioneer. Dam memory is sucking. My kicker amp is on the passenger side to limit walk on mositure. I wish it was more protected but it has monster guage cable and fuseing. Thats why a seatbase setup would be sweet.

Good luck man!

Thanks for the pics!

I dig the set-up...

Are you running a battery just for the stereo? What is the red switch thingy?

Do you think it's okay to mount a sub outside the engine comp? The wires and the magnet will be inside the engine bay itself...

I'm thinking I just may run 3 batteries. One to start the boat/run lights/bilge fan pump. One for the Stereo, and one for the trolling motor.

Re: Powered Subwoofer and speaker install

thanks...

well the red thing is a multiple battery switch. you'll be needing one for your planned setup. it allows you to control power by selecting which battery runs the engine, trolling motor, stereo etc. it also allows you to turn everything off to save against drain. i bought the Perko brand. there are others but that brand is pretty reliable. they sell them here on iboats and many other places. about $30. go over to electronics and read some posts from Silvertip, he is a grey beard on switches and multiple batteries. i dont know how to do a three battery hookup.

think about a battery charger too, i have the tightwads version of an onboard battery charger. its a Sears model mounted up in the bilge area towards the gunnel shelf. you probably have the same shelf.

i see no reason you cant mount a sub in the engine bay area. just look for clearance and no obstructions.

Re: Powered Subwoofer and speaker install

Cut template for sub box front. I'm boxing in under both seats, for storage, extra battery, electronics, and sub box...

See pics,

Cutting tops this weekend...

This is how the sub box turned out. I haven't started on the rest of the stereo install, due to my boat now being in a pseudo resto mode....

You can check it out here if interested...

Re: Powered Subwoofer and speaker install

sorry don't mean to high jack your thread but the speakers on my 02 is shot, the previous owner replaced them with some 5.25 but the hole seems to be for a 6.5. I just wanted to confirm this before I go buy some replacements.
