powerhead assembly

when attaching powerhead to exhaust housing, manual says to put on and tighten bolts. no mention of a gasket or sealant. do i use it or not? its a 1979 johnson 85hp v4

I use OMC/BRP/Evinrude Gasket Sealing Compound on the gasket and all bolt threads. Mercury calls it Perfect Seal #4 if that is handier.

Water and exhaust flow thru that gasket, so use a gasket sealer on both sides. I'd probably run the engine through a couple of heat/cool cycles, then retorque those powerhead to exhaust adapter bolts. Then put the lower (exhaust housing covers) cowlings back in place.
