The powerhead can be removed from the engine without taking the engine off of the boat.

How big of a job it can be depends on ones mechanical expertise.... for me, very easy, for my wife, impossible.

What makes you suspect that the gasket is leaking?

Re: Powerhead base gasket ?

The sneezing at idle is caused (usually) by a carburetor that is running lean, normally due to a slightly too large idle air bleed jet which is located at the top front portion of the carburetor. That engine uses a #33 jet (.033).

With the carburetor face plate off and the engine idling, one carburetor at a time, stick a couple fingers into the carburetor throat, acting as a manual choke. When the sneezing stops and the engine smooths out, you've found the malfunctioning carburetor.

If the above cures the sneezing problem, I'd suggest that you thoroughly clean and rebuild all of the carburetors first to see if this corrects the problem. If it does not, then you can replace that air bleed jet with a smaller size..... try a #31 (.031) or a #30 (.030). The smaller air bleed jet restricts the air flow resulting in a greater fuel flow.

If there is an exhaust leak due to a failed PH gasket of any kind, it should be obvious when running. Remove the small covers that exist under the powerhead to inspect for leaks..... should be a excess fuel/oil residue escaping at any leakage point.

What is the compression on that engine, and does it have a strong spark on all cylinders?

Also..... Check the hood to make sure that the air intake portion of it isn't clogged, also check the air intake under the bottom carburetor.

Re: Powerhead base gasket ?

Air intake under bottom carburetor is usually just a hole in the bottom cover/pan which has a protective splash plate covering it.

Be sure to let me know about the compression readings.

Keep in mind that you do not want to change the idle air bleed jets unless needed as that of course causes the engine to run richer on the fuel/oil mixture.

If one or more of the carburetor throtle plates does not close completely, that will also cause sneezing.

In all probability, yes. It's important that all of those butterflies be closed at idle.

Re: Powerhead base gasket ?

If that compression test is accurate, and I assume you've double checked it a few times, that does create a problem. You have a difference of 38 psi between the highest and lowest reading which is quite excessive.

At this point, I suggest that you remove the cylinder head in order to inspect the pistons, cylinder walls, and the underside of the cylinder head.

Let me know what you find...... pictures if you have time.

Pictures are best if sized to no wider than 600. If you don't know how to resize them, send them to me via email at ReevesJ32@aol.com .
