this is not repair related but I felt this was the best place for this question.

what is the percentage of hp change when omc started to rate johnson/evinrude outboards at the prop instead of at the powerhead? comparing equal hp that is( 50-50 for example). what i could find in a search is that it happened in 1985, is this correct?

thanks for you time

Re: powerhead rated vs. prop rated hp

Not all of them changed in 1985, but I don't know what years and what models changed before that.

Most of the time I figure that about 5HP was used by the geartrain in the mid-range engines, but it may have been more in the larger engines. For example, the 100HP models disappeared and were replaced by 90s. Same engine? I don't know.

I think in the smaller engines, 25 and below, the difference is trivial.

In 1983 they made a 200 hp. In 1984, it was 185.
