1998 johnson 115 spl cross flow. Bad compression in one cylinder (upper starboard) 120, 120, 80, 120. After decarbing with sea foam, no difference in compression. Bad ring or something in powerhead. I would like to do some of the repair myself ie. disassembly and removal of powerhead and take it (the powerhead with flywheel attached to a mech for repair. Can someone tell me if this is a reasonable approach? Also can someone give me the name of someone in florida (Preferably s. fla) who might do the rebuilding work?

Re: powerhead rebuild

awol1 - Fine project - sorta wish I had one like that to play with. My suggestion would be to start out by getting the OMC service manual and parts book for your motor. They are available. Take your time and do the entire job yourself except for the machine work. It should not cost a bunch either with only one bad cylinder.

You can pull the heads off of the motor and describe what you see. You may have something as simple as a blown head gasket. Check the condition of the plugs and inspect the cylinder walls, top of the pistons etc. Let us know what you find.
