I have an older Johnson SuperSeaHorse 40 hp about 1973. I am in the process of removing the powerhead due to the plugwire assembly being loose and catching it. I have removed upper housing hand crank and 1 1/16" bolt and am not sure how to proceed from here. Any help greatly appreciated.~Shawn

Re: Powerhead removal

I think you're talking about removing the flywheel, not the entire powerhead.

If so, what you need is a standard automotive harmonic balancer puller. You'll also need three 1/4" Grade 8 bolts and washers, 3.5" long. The three screw holes on the flywheel are the attachment point, then you use the center screw on the puller to apply pressure to the crankshaft.

Thanks CA, did that and immediately observed damage to the 2 round things with multiple thin metal layers, also noticed the arm that holds the plug wires is loose and saw where it had caught the flywheel. how do I proceed from here?

Best bet is to buy the OMC shop manual specific to your motor and go from there.

Where are the ignition coils damaged? (multiple thin metal layers things)?

You can remove the entire ignition plate by loosening the four phillips screws near the middle.

Solittle is right, you want to have a manual handy. There's a bunch on ebay right now cheap. Use these search terms:
(40, 40hp) (evinrude, johnson) manual 1973

EDIT: Hold on a second. We need to be certain of your make year. Tell us the model number. It's on the name plate between the two transom brackets, up on top of the tilt/steering bracket. Or it's on the port transom bracket.

Re: Powerhead removal

One coil has damage on the round portion near the top, the other had damage to the thin metal layers. Should I replace the coils?

Sorry I left you hanging there SpokeaneBassPro!

Yes, '66 is correct. Insulation damage is very common on these older ignition coils and if it hasn't caused a problem already, it soon will. Fortunately, that makes the new coils fairly inexpensive. I always replace both, unless someone has only replaced one recently. Aftermarket P/N 18-5181 (Iboats, NAPA) is my favorite coil, but the dealer coil is OK too. Much better than the originals anyway.

For details on how to set up the magneto plate, check out Tom Travis' website http://www.outboard-boat-motor-repair.com/ . His 3hp and 5.5hp use the same ignition system as your 40hp.

If the coils are hitting the flywheel because the magneto plate is too wobbly, there's a simple repair. Check out Joe Reeves' wobbling armature plate fix:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=020981

Hope this helps!
