Powerhead swap?

I have a 1980 Evinrude 50hp and a 1985 Johnson 50hp. My question is will the 50hp evinrude power head fit the 85 Johnson mid section? The Johnson midsection is in better condition than the evinrude and the johnson powerhead isnt any good. I know the lower units will interchange.

Thanks!

Re: Powerhead swap?

They should both use gasket 0351018
So as above you should be fine, id do it myself on that basis that gaskets are the same

Ive changed that gasket on my motor recently, ive a 60hp same vintage, it uses that same gasket.
Removing the powerhead bolts was hard as they were seized in there.
If i was you id remove the evinrude powerhead first so you can practice technique before removing the head off the better midsection

Re: Powerhead swap?

Thanks for the info. The evinrude powerhead is sitting on my workbench No seized bolts I was lucky just wondering how luck I will be on the johnson lol. After removing the lower unit first on the evinrude and considering the johnson has a new water pump I dont think I even need to remove the lower unit on the johnson.

Re: Powerhead swap?

Thats a really good start.
I dont have a good engine hoist so i always remove the LU as i never want to lower the engine on to the top of the driveshaft and have the weight doing damage there if the splines arent lined up when its lowered.
Its always beng my way of doing it, maybe im being pedantic maybe not
With the LU removed i can then just slide the LU carefully up and in to finish with

If you havent ordered the gasket yet you may want to add the lower seal to the order list.
