powerpack vs coils on 225 johnson?

Took my ratty-running '90 Johnny 225 to the dealer and he reports one no-spark cylinder and all others but two running weak. He says no spark means power pack and weak spark the coil. Question is, if the power pack's faulty, wouldn't all cylinders be dead? Couldn't it be a dead coil?

Done correctly, he would have checked it with the proper meters and can tell from the power pack output tests if all six "sides" are good or bad. Yes, one output lead can be dead. It's unlikely, but possible, all six can be dead.

As far as "weak" spark goes it could be a coil or a dirty connection (usually primary or the ground) or even the spark plug lead.

Good luck!

Hello
gotta agree with Dhadley. with the proper trouble shooting I can tell you at cranking and running what your trigger voltage and chargecoil( voltage into the pack) is at any rpm. bad juice in is bad juice out. then I move the meter to the coil primary and see if the voltage out of the pack is equal to what I put in thje pack. then I break out the old spark KV tester and look at what comes out of the coil secondary. with the proper steps its an easy fix. if your tech wants to take short cuts then its time to find another.
Good luck and keep posting
